Built as a United States Army Coast Artillery Corps base between 1898 and 1920 to protect Puget Sound and active from 1902 until 1953, the State of Washington purchased Fort Worden in 1957. In 1971 it became the property of Washington State Parks, opening as a park in 1973. It received a national Historic Landmarks designation in 1976.
Fort Worden Historical State Park occupies a 433 acre hill overlooking Admiralty Inlet, just to the north of Port Townsend, Washington. There are 12 miles of hiking trails, beaches and campgrounds. Museums, event and conference spaces, vacation rentals, restaurants, classes and workshops, a college and a book publisher all occupy the former US Army base.
