Two of America’s newest air carriers are about to go nearly head-to-head over business in Connecticut, with the two carriers based at separate airports only an hour apart.
Breeze Airways has just signed on to upgrade its operation at Hartford’s Bradley International Airport to a pilot and crew base that will create over 200 new jobs, and some of its new routes will be direct competition for Avelo, which has its East Coast base at Tweed New Haven Airport.
Bradley has service by a number of airlines, including Spirit and Allegiant, who fly a number of leisure routes from there, some overlapping with Avelo’s Florida flights from Tweed. At Tweed, Avelo is the sole scheduled airline, and has just announced it will add a number of routes, including Charleston, already a key destination for Breeze from Bradley.
Breeze will announce eight new destinations from Bradley shortly. The airline has secured state financing that requires the airline to maintain over 200 jobs in the area as a condition.
