One of the things I’ve most missed during the CoVid pandemic is visiting markets during my travels. Not only has access to foreign countries been very problematic, many markets have been closed or severely restricted. Hopefully we’ll see this change soon.
As I was reviewing my photos, I came across images of a market we visited at dusk in the Old City of Jaipur. It was scattered around the streets and promenades — without distinct boundaries. Many merchants simply had their goods displayed on carts and blankets on the road — others ran small shops. It was an interesting market and the photos reminded me of what I’d been missing.
Our tour group walked from our hotel through one of the gates into the inner city. Here’s where we came across this widespread market. Most of the items on display were of good quality. The assortment of produce was excellent — fresh and in abundance.
Many of the shops were selling spices. Indians do enjoy a spicy diet!
Dried lentils, beans, and rice were readily found, and there was an abundance of noodles of different sizes and shapes. I was surprised to see so much pasta for sale,
Sweet shops were selling an assortment of treats popular with the locals — the few I tried were not really to my taste.
Flowers to be used as offerings at the temples were often sold from motorobikes….
An assortment of other items were available at the market, like clothes, shoes and household goods.
I hope to be wandering in an exotic market somewhere this year!
