Canada’s Prince Edward Island has a new treat for serious walkers: a 435-mile walking route that circles the entire island province, keeping close to its shores. Of course, the way is also open for those who only want to walk part, as well.
The Island Walk, as it’s called, opened in September, but its true first season begins with the coming spring and summer seasons. At 435 miles, it’s estimated as a 32-day walk at 12 to 15 miles a day, but completing the circuit or rushing through isn’t the plan, according to Bryson Guptil, who led the creation of the walk.
In a press release he explained that “Just like the Camino de Santiago, The Island Walk will give you the time to slow down and be present in your thoughts and daily journey, while experiencing the simple beauty of the island around you.” In aid of that, there are waymarkers and detours along the way.
There are also a number of lodging places along the way that have signed on to get walkers to and from the nearest trail entrance, and to cooperate in moving luggage from stop to stop. The trail passes through many small villages as well as the island’s two main cities.
Oh, and yes: The Canadian Potato Museum is along the route.
