Berlin’s former Tegel Airport, closed over a year ago when the new Berlin-Brandenburg-Willy Brandt airport opened has found new life as a center for tech innovation and research.
Now labeled as the Urban Tech Republic, it’s already home to a number of companies involved in research and development and tech production, with more slated in the months ahead, using the former airport buildings and runways.
Among those already in place are a company using the runways to test its remote-controlled electric cars which it hopes to operate as taxis, and a company working on battery development and 3D printing which moved to the airport site because of the large spaces available for prototyping.
Convenient for the city’s tech future, but still mourned by those travelers who appreciated its close-in location!
