The famed Keukenhof flower park near Lisse, in the Netherlands opened its first real season in two years in full bloom and ready for visitors, although fewer are expected this year than in pre-pandemic times.
Keukenhof director Bart Siemerink told local press that spring weather means there’s already a lot of color, even though it’s a couple of weeks from the height of tulip season, because hyacinths and some tulips are already out.
The flowers represent over 800 tulip varieties, with seven million or so bulbs planted each year. Last year, 27,000 visitors got to briefly enjoy the display before the arrival of the Delta variant shut it down again. In 2019, over 1.5 million visited, but Siemerink is expecting fewer this year because many visitors in the past came from eastern Europe, and are less likely to travel this year.
