Frommers takes a fresh look at hotel booking

If you follow the ads, you’ll know that every hotel booking site with the money to buy an ad is the best, has the lowest price, the best service and more. And, of course, you know they can’t all be right.

Frommers, which is celebrating its 65th year now, has gone back to its research numbers and has come up with updated rankings for best and worst hotel booking sites, and backed it up with some solid explanations that help you figure out which one is best for you.

That’s not an obvious answer, as the Frommers article makes clear. Overall, they found that Google has, for the first time, made it to the top of the list, just ahead of much-less-known HotelsCombined. But, as the article points out, there are many factors involved in the ratings, which can make a personal difference.

For instance, some, like Expedia and Booking.com now offer a significant number of apartments while higher-rated sites may not. Booking, a long-time #1 that’s at #6 this year, doesn’t always come up with the lowest prices, but has a bigger range of choices than others.

Kudos to Frommers for their detailed methodology explanation—even if you’re not looking to book just now, it’s an education in making travel choices. And keep an eye out: They’re working on new rankings for airline ticket sites as well.
