Ireland’s longest greenway, a 130km path running along the Royal Canal from County Kildare to Longford has been named Cycle Route of the Year 2022.
The award, by a panel of three judges, was given at Fiets en Wandelbuers, a Dutch fair that aims to stimulate the development of high-quality bike and hike routes. Normally attended by as many as 40,000, this year it was held on line due to pandemic regulations.
The panel cited the Royal Canal Greenway’s clear signage, road surface, and the use of the route by both tourists and locals.
Runners up were three trails with notably long names: Germany’s Badischer Weinradweg, Belgium’s Vlaanderenroute and the Dutch Waterlinieroute.
