Two of the country’s ambitious new airlines, Breeze and Avelo, are about to compete directly as they pass their first anniversaries in the air. Both have announced flights connecting Orlando with Charleston, South Carolina.
Up to now, each of the airlines has developed regional networks with no overlap. Both have also made moves toward a broader national coverage, Avelo by adding a hub at New Haven in addition to its Burbank, California home, while Breeze has announced its first transcontinental service from New York’s Stewart International. Avelo is also adding a base at Orlando.
Although Breeze has had Charleston as one of its focus cities, Avelo was first to announce the Orlando to Charleston route. When Breeze followed up with its announcement and a $39 fare, lower than Avelo’s. Avelo quickly matched.
