A hoard of Viking-era coins and other metal work that was about to be auctioned off over public protests in Sweden has now been sold to two numismatic research foundations to be displayed in Sweden’s museums.
The collection of 912 coins and 40 silver items, dating between about 800 and 1018 AD were found in the 1980s in an old sideboard that had passed down through generations of the family in whose home it was found. The family was planning to auction it off until the foundations stepped in.
The hoard’s first public display will open soon as part of the Royal Coin Cabinet at Stockholm’s Economy Museum.
