I always enjoy photographing old movie theaters, many of which have been restored or repurposed. The Paramount Theater in downtown Charlottesville Virginia was built in 1931, closed in 1974, but sold and restored. It reopened in 2004 and became a performing arts center and also plays host to the Charlottesville Opera.
The historic Star Theater, located in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia has been showing movies since 1928.
The High Street Theater at Longwood (top photo) is located in Farmville Virginia and is now part of the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts. This is a repurposed old High’s Ice Cream shop from many decades ago. It had also been a beauty shop, a vape shop, and a various other things before becoming a movie theater with old time marquee.
(Page Theater)
The historic Page Theater located in Luray Virginia was opened in 1939 then putup for sale when the owner died. It has recently been purchased by a local owner and now back in operation as the “New Page Theater”. The inside photo is courtesy of the Page Theater website.
The Dixie theater in Staunton Virginia opened in 1913 as the New Theater. The theater’s exterior features dramatic arches (inlaid with terra cotta tiles), false windows (also decorated with terra cotta tiles), and, above the arches, four laughing theatrical faces. After a fire in 1936 destroyed the original interior, it was rebuilt in Art Moderne style.
I love old movie theaters! Thanks for sharing these with us.
