Durbanville Rose Garden, South Africa

I believe we first came across a reference to this little rose garden in the ‘Secret Cape Town’ book – see https://www.travelgumbo.com/bl…e-secret-attractions for other destinations covered by the series. Durbanville is part of the greater City of Cape Town metropolitan area, but lies on the northern outskirts surrounded by farms producing wine and wheat.

The guide book recommends visiting the garden in the summer months between October and May, “when most of the roses are in full bloom and their scent in the sunshine is breathtaking”. Our visit in March ticked that box.

The garden was established in 1979 by the Western Cape Rose Society and is now one of only three trial rose gardens in the southern hemisphere (i.e. nurseries test their new varietals here).

I do not think the photos below require any explanation. The garden is a delight.

We parked on the road just outside the entrance. Admission is free.
