There may be quite a few puzzled passengers landing at London Gatwick these days, possibly fooled by an 80-metre-long sign with huge letters spelling out “Welcome to Luton,” another of London’s airports. Luton is as far north of the capital as Gatwick is to the south.
The prank sign was the work of Max Fosh, who told BBC Radio that it cost him about £4000 for the sign and renting the field for six weeks. He told reporters “It’s my job to make videos and my videos are all about doing silly things, to put a smile on people’s faces but just to be silly, I’m glad this stunt has gone down well.”
It’s not entirely original, though; as reported last year, a building near Sydney Airport in Australia sports a big “Welcome to Perth” sign on its roof; the author of that one says he took his inspiration from a Milwaukee man whose house has had a “Welcome to Cleveland” sign since 1978.
