An easy hike near Anchorage is to Thunder Bird Falls. It’s an out-and-back walk totaling just under two miles, on a broad well-maintained trail which is popular with families.
The trail heads into the forest following Eklutna Creek for its entire length. The trail splits into two at about its halfway point. Take the path to the right to continue to the observation platform at the trail’s end, where you see a somewhat distant but straight-on view of Thunderbird Falls. The Falls are about 200 feet tall.
You can return to the trail bifurcation and take the path to the left which leads down to the base of the waterfalls. We did not do this route, in part because of time constraints, in part because it is said to be wet and slippery.
