Vienna has newly arrived in the top 20 of bike-friendly cities, at position 9, but the listmaker, Copenhagenize Index, says the city has to do better to head further up the list, including improving bicycle infrastructure and bike share systems.
One step that may help that along is a unique summer program in which the city is sending mobile bicycle check squads to the city’s swimming pools to offer free check-ups, minor tune-ups and adjustments and diagnosis while the bikers swim. The service is free of charge, and goes under the name of “Mit Rad ins Bad,” or “To the Pool by Bike,” encouraging bike use to get around the city.
Vienna, which is relatively flat, has 1,200 km of marked cycleways and dedicated lanes, along with a ‘traffic-calmed’ city center.
