One of the privileges of visiting Custer State Park is to see its wildlife. The park is most famous for its large bison herd, but there’s also deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, and a sizeable burro population.
The burros in Custer State Park are feral, having gone wild after being introduced to the region as pack animals. They have been nick-named “begging burros” for their tendency to want free food from passers through.
Most parks don’t want you to feed wild animals, but apparently park officials don’t mind if you feed them simple foods, like crackers or carrots.
