One of my favorite places in Central park is the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain. Built during the Civil War, the terrace was designed on two levels to offer views of The Lake. It serves as the northern end of the Mall.
In 1873 the fountain, also known as The Angel of the Waters, was installed. It was designed by Emma Stebins, and its name refers to the biblical story of the healing of the paralytic at Bethesda. The terrace and the fountain were renamed Bethesda in its honor.
