Chocolateria San Ginés, Madrid

In the thirteen years between my first visit to Madrid and my return this June, only one memory stayed fresh: the Chocolateria San Ginés, Madrid.

True, there are monuments and museums, parks and gardens, all enjoyed. But the churros at San Ginés and their thick, rich, fragrant chocolate companion came to my mind every time I enjoyed a churro anywhere else. Oh, I enjoyed them, but they were not the same. I always knew I needed to return.

The churros at San Ginés are unmatched. Flavor, perfect, Crisp outside, perfect. Almost not there but there inside, perfect. And the chocolate is about as perfect you could wish for, unless it had the same flavor but thin enough to drink.

The Chocolateria is open 24/7, with seating and take-away and even outdoor benches, in a small passageway tucked behind the San Ginés church, whose lovely carved lettering never grows stale.
