AirTags play ‘To Catch A Thief’

Apple’s electronic AirTags, designed to help users find lost property or track the location of their luggage, have taken on an additional role as a sort of LoJack for suitcases, catching up to a Florida bag snatcher.

AirTags are small devices that can be placed in bags, on luggage tags or attached to devices. If they are reported lost or missing, they are activated to report their location via any nearby Apple device using Bluetooth.

In this case, the AirTag was in a suitcase containing $15,000 worth of jewelry and checked in for a flight to Destin, Florida. Leave aside the question of why someone would check a bag like that. When the bag didn’t make it to the conveyor at Destin, the tags were activated; a couple of days later the suitcase and its contents were recovered from a contract bag handler.
