Plant-based food in general, and vegan dishes especially continue to be a growing trend around the world, so it’s not surprising that vegan food is now a tourism attraction as well, at least in Oakland, California.
Visit Oakland, the city’s tourism authority, is launching the Oakland Vegan Trail, which includes an overview of each restaurant, with menu highlights, location, and contact information, along with a detailed map of their locations. There’s also a list of vegetarian but not vegan restaurants.
The sponsors hope the trail will bring more visitors to Oakland, perpetual second city of the area, with most attention focused on San Francisco and Berkeley. But Gumbo’s not quite sure why Visit Oakland wants to call it “Brooklyn by the Bay.”
