New book opens paths for disabled hikers

An avid nature-lover who has several medical conditions that make access to the outdoors difficult has written a book whose goal is to open pathways for people who face challenges when hiking.

Syren Nagakyrie’s new book, ‘The Disabled Hiker’s Guide to Western Washington and Oregon,’ is a first step toward that goal. It offers detailed descriptions of dozens of trails and what is needed to navigate them. Nagakyrie is also the founder of Disabled Hikers, a resource for others, and the publisher of the guide.

The guide and the site grow out of Nagakyrie’s experiences after she moved to the west coast and began hiking in national forests where she found great beauty, but also many undocumented obstacles. The experience started Nagakyrie on research and writing a blog, and now the book, which is available from the Disabled Hikers site as well as on Amazon.
