Singapore’s Changi Airport, often rated as the world’s best, is about to get a whole lot bigger under plans announced by the Singapore government last month, with a new terminal that will open in the mid-2030s.
The new Terminal 5 will be larger than the existing four terminals together and will be able to handle about 50 million passengers a year, vastly expanding capacity from the 68 million the airport handled in 2019, before the pandemic.
Runway space for the airport will be expanded by converting an existing military runway to civilian use. The project also includes a new neighborhood and a new industrial area near the park. The terminal design will focus on sustainability in materials and also in operation, generating much of its own power through a vast solar roof.
Tunnels will connect the new terminal to the existing complex as well as to its own midfield satellite piers for aircraft. While details have just been announced, Singapore has been planning the expansion since 2013, and hired engineering and design consultants in 2018.
