Touring Japan by rail is about to take a little twist, allowing you to drive the train over Japan’s biggest rail network. But not quite. JR East, Japan’s biggest rail operator is putting the simulations it uses to train engineers out on the game platform Steam starting Monday.
The game is based on actual JR simulators uses accurate recreations of the Hachiko Line between Takasaki and Kuragano Stations as well as the Keihin Tohoku Line from Omiya to Urawa Stations. For now, the choices are one train type heading north and another heading south. When the game is fully developed, users will be able to choose more routes and train types.
Because they’re based on real simulators, using actual video footage of the rail lines, the sound effects are said to be startlingly real, as well as the physics of braking and acceleration.
