Wyndham goes for cashless tipping

news0919pThat envelope on the dresser with a cash tip for housekeeping may be on the way out, at least at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

Wyndham, the world’s largest hotel franchising company with approximately 9,000 hotels across more than 95 countries, has signed on with a payment company, Béné, whose platform allows guests to tip individual staff members using electronic payments just as they do for so much else—including the hotel itself.

A McKinsey consultant study says that 82% of Americans are using digital payments these days.

The new system is available for all hotels among Wyndham’s brands to adopt. Each employee is represented by a QR code that customers can use to leave a tip. Depending on the hotel’s arrangements, the tips either go directly to the employee’s account, or to the hotel for pooling and payout.
