The Black Forest (Schwartzwald) of Germany is a large mountainous and forested area in south-west Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. While it’s famous for its ore mines, historic military fortifications and forest, many foreigners know this place mainly for their famous cuckoo clocks and Black Forest cake.
I took family members and work colleagues on road trips to the tourist town of Triberg (pronounced Tree-berg) which is home to many hand-carved cuckoo clock outlets. The shops have very good prices, wide selection and will ship them to your home.
On one trip, we passed through a big snow storm as we rose in elevation. It was absolutely breathtaking. The town of Triberg has many other sights besides cuckoo clock outlets. It is home to the world’s biggest cuckoo clock, Schwartzwald museum, and a series of waterfalls in the Gutach River, which are among the tallest in Germany. The big cuckoo clock bird alone is 14 feet long and weighs 330 pounds. When driving in winter or higher elevations anytime of year, many places in Europe have road signs that make snow chains mandatory for travel.
