The Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden is located close to Hilo on the island of Hawai’i. The valley was created by the erosion of water and wind shaping coastline’s lava cliffs.
Entering the 20-acre garden, you descent into Onomea Valley along a boardwalk into a glorious setting of flowers, towering trees, and lush foliage.
The area was used as a fishing village, sugar mill location, passionfruit farm, and a place to graze cattle. By the early 1900s, the area was deserted until Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse discovered the valley in 1977.
They turned the acreage into a 20-acre natural greenhouse supporting more than 2,000 plant species.
The mile-and-a-half-long pathway takes you over streams and past waterfalls, by colorful flowers, and to the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
