Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles

Passing through Los Angeles in November, I made a beeline for the Walt Disney Concert Hall, a building I was interested in but hadn’t got around to seeing on previous visits. I wasn’t disappointed.

Occupying an entire city block in downtown Los Angeles, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is an architectural landmark that took more than 15 years to build.

Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the venue opened in 2003 and is claimed to be one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world.

Resembling silver sails, more than 6,000 panels create the curving, stainless steel skin of the Concert Hall’s exterior.

The use of natural materials and skylights has lent a bright and airy appearance to the Concert Hall’s interior. Huge columns stand in the lobby like tree trunks, and they are in fact clad in vertical grain Douglas Fir.
