Sweden opens a cat registry

,If herding cats is notoriously a difficult task, Sweden’s agriculture authorities are hoping that registering them will be easier. Under a new law, they are responsible for creating a registry that will help re-unite people with lost pets.

The registration, which will also help dealing with homeless cat populations, costs 40 kronor if done online or 100 kronor by mail, with the fees intended to pay for the cost of the program.

There is no penalty for not registering, and officials expect that it will be quite a while before it’s fully effective: a similar registry for dogs took nearly twenty years to go from 50% to 90-95%.
