The Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte has renamed itself after Capt. ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and taken on a new mission as not only a historical resource but as part of developing opportunities for science and tech education.
Sullenberger, a veteran pilot and airline safety expert, is best known for his no-lives-lost landing of USAir flight 1549 in the Hudson River in 2008. The recovered and partially-restored plane is one of the museum’s main exhibits.
The museum will move by the end of the year to a new 105,000 square foot campus that will provide space for exhibits as well as immersive learning experiences like flight simulators, interactive exhibits, STEM education programs and authentic RFID storytelling of the Carolinas’ past, present and future in aviation.
The expansion and renaming was made possible in part by a large donation from Ric Elias and his company Red Ventures. Elias was a passenger on Flight 1549.
