World’s longest river cruise: 51 days

An Indian river cruise ship is out to set a record for the longest river cruise ever, with a 51-day itinerary following the sub-continent’s rivers, including both India and Bangladesh.

The ship, MV Ganga Vilas, is operated by Antara cruises, and will make the long journey twice a year, between October and March, with the first sailing last Friday. Varanasi, on the Ganges, is the itinerary’s starting point; the whole route covers 3200 kilometers of river, visiting many ports including Kolkata and Dhaka.

The luxury ship can accommodate 36 passengers in 18 suites, and this year’s and next year’s sailings are already sold out, with most of the passengers coming from Switzerland and France, where marketing has been concentrated. It’s a bit of a bank-breaker: prices range from around $50-55,000 per person.
