Vermeer contest draws comic entries

A challenge by the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague has inspired quite a few artists to create their own versions of Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring,’ to replace the painting at the museum while the original is in Amsterdam for a major exhibit of Vermeer’s work.

In celebration of its most famous artwork, the Mauritshuis invited people worldwide to make a work inspired by the Dutch master—using photography, weaving, painting, plasticine, paper quilling or whatever artistic technique they fancied. Selections will fill the blank space while the painting is away.

A selection of the entries, still being judged, can be seen HERE. Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum will play host to the Girl in an exhibit that features 28 of Vermeer’s 37 known paintings.
