Whether or not The Banshees of Inisherin wins any of the nine Oscars it’s been nominated for, it has already given Ireland a big prize: A popular film featuring Ireland and guaranteed to increase tourism interest in the ‘Emerald Isle.’
And to make sure the tourists know they are welcome and where to go, Tourism Ireland is spending over €500,000 on marketing campaigns built around the destinations. €250,000 was already spent in late 2022, and another €73,000 so far this year. A Tourism Ireland spokesperson said an additional €200,000 is budgeted for the run up to next month’s awards ceremonies.
The movie, starring Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, was filmed on location on Inis Mór and Achill Island, and has already won several BAFTA and Golden Globe awards. The film’s producer, Searchlight Pictures, has worked with Tourism Ireland to produce a short film promoting both the film and the setting.
