Florence, Italy

Florence (aka Firenze) Italy in Tuscany is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance.  I usually avoid guided bus tours, but for this trip we wanted to see all the highlights of historic Italian cities and the car drive would have been too much for me.

The stop in Florence was much of a disappointment.  A handicapped woman on our bus had family roots in Florence and said it was going to be the highlight of her trip.  When we arrived at Florence, tourist buses were not allowed in the historic part of the city and we had to take a good walk to town.  The handicapped woman was impaired so we moved very slowly and had to take short breaks.  Falling behind in our schedule, the guide told us that we had little time left and if we wanted, we could proceed separately and try to see as much as we could in the remaining time.  Needless to say, we had no time for museums or restaurants, so we just took lots of photos to get back to the bus in time for departure.

We did have fun talking to locals including this man feeding his horse in the square.  The remainder of the trip to places like Pisa, Assisi, and Rome went off without a hitch, but sadly we missed almost all of Florence’s art attractions.
