European wine labels will soon enter the realm of what some might consider TMI—Too Much Information—over the protests of French and Italian winemakers who have won only a small concession in their protests over new regulations.
While the EU has regulated nutrition and other labeling on most packaged foods for four decades, no standard labeling was ever set for alcoholic beverages, until rules were proposed in a 2021 revision to take effect at the end of this year, making comparisons across borders and types easier.
What won’t appear, however, is a Nutri-Score result. Protests led by Italian and French winemakers scratched that item from the rules. Nutri-System rates the overall nutritional value of foods on a scale from A to F, and the winemakers pointed out that it would be hard on them, because all wines would be rated F.
