Portland, Oregon is back on the map—specifically the map of Amtrak’s Cascades route. Until 2020, Portland was the originating station for the train, whose other end is Vancouver, British Columbia. Service from Portland resumed Monday.
The route, which takes about four hours to reach Seattle and another four to reach Vancouver, runs near the coast and through some spectacular river and mountain territory. Service between Seattle and Vancouver resumed last September.
Cascades is one of three overlapping Amtrak long-distance routes that together make it possible to travel from San Diego at the Mexican border into Canada. The Pacific Surfliner, hugging the coast, runs from San Diego through Los Angeles and ends in San Luis Obispo; the Coast Starlight starts in Los Angeles and passes through the Bay Area on its way to Seattle, and the Cascades covers the last part of the run.
