The Mekong River forms the heart of Asia’s ‘rice bowl’ and the world’s largest inland fishery. It winds some 4,500 kilometres from the Tibetan plateau to the South China Sea and is said to be second only to the Amazon River in terms of fish biodiversity.
Cruising on the Mekong River between Vietnam and Cambodia can be a cathartic experience. To observe the people who live on or alongside the river going about their daily lives brings both joy and sorrow.
The simplicity of their lives is refreshing, but the conditions in which they live are sobering.
