Norwegian Cruise Line seems to be having a hard time deciding what’s really safe at sea: In-person muster, or lifeboat, drills on deck, or a combination of a video in cabin or on smartphones followed by a brief visit to the muster station.
The latter, called e-mustering, has become widespread in recent years, includig on NCL, but in late January the line returned to the full on-deck experience, saying it was “an effort to enhance the onboard guest experience” and said it was for “the safety of our guests and crew.”
After protests from cruisers, NCL has announced that it will go back to e-mustering on April 1, saying “In an effort to enhance the onboard guest experience while keeping the safety of our guests and crew our top priority, we will reinstate e-muster drills through our online check-in for sailings beginning April 1, 2023,” Same wording, different decision.
