One of Buenos Aires’ newer landmarks is this bridge, known as El Puente de La Mujer (Woman’s Bridge). It’s a pedestrian bridge crossing the Rio de la Plata in the Puerto Madero region of the city, close to the docks. The bridge has a central section which is capable of rotating 90o, allowing ships to pass by. It’s a lovely bridge, especially lite up at night as in the top photo.
The bridge was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and was built in Spain. Construction began in 1998 and was completed in 2001. The bridge derived its name from the many streets in the city named for important Argentine women. The architect was rich in imagination and likened his design to a couple dancing the tango (the mast is the male and the curve of the bridge the female).
The bridge was declared a Cultural Heritage of the City of Buenos Aires in 2018. In 2022 the bridge was renovated using plastic timber made of recycled bottles.
Puerto Madero is a nicely revitalized portion of the city, one of the only places where you can gain access to the river and is an excellent place to dine, stroll and sightsee.
