Dublin Airport has been given permission to set up a toll system, collecting a fee from family and friends dropping off passengers at the airport or welcoming them home, although the Airport Authority says it doesn’t plan to do that, at least yet.
The controversial move would also result in removing numbers of short-term parking spaces near the terminals, and replacing them with a free waiting area for dropping off and picking up, away from the terminals. The proposal would generate revenue for airport improvements, if implemented, and is intended to push people to use public transit as well.
Opponents of the plan argue that there is no actual need, since people “have been using the drop-off zones appropriately for numerous years now” and because a plan is underway for a direct Metrolink transit connection to the terminals.
