Italy speeds up the trip to Pompeii

Italy is building a new station on its high-speed rail lines to speed visitors from Rome to the ancient city of Pompeii, destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD.

Pompeii is one of the country’s major tourism sites, but getting there from Rome has required changing trains in Naples and taking a local line that makes a number of stops between Naples and Pompeii. The new route will speed that up by creating a station directly on the high-speed express line.

The €35 million project for the station and a local transit hub at Pompeii is about to begin, and will open by the beginning of next year, according to the Minister of Culture. The line, from Rome to Naples to Salerno, also serves Rome’s Fiumicino airport.
