Two of America’s newest airlines, flying only since 2021, continue to build out their route networks with new routes and cities, even while trimming others that didn’t work out economically.
Avelo, which is the only scheduled carrier at Delaware’s Wilmington Airport, is doubling down and then some on service there, adding nine more cities to the five it already flies to from there. Before Avelo’s arrival last year, Delaware had been the only state with no scheduled air service.
The airline’s plan has been to fly to leisure destinations from less-used airports in population-dense areas; its other hubs are at Burbank, California; New Haven, Connecticut and Orlando. On many of its routes, it is the only carrier.
Breeze, meanwhile, is stepping up its New York area coverage, adding more routes to its ‘lesser-used but in a dense area’ airport base at New York/Islip on Long Island, with flights to Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina and Portland, Maine. Those flights also add to Breeze’s connection options, since it flies to nine other cities from RDU.
