Flemish bartender pulls 120-hour shift

Bet you never knew there was an official record for the longest shift behind the bar serving customers. Turns out there is, and the new champion, after 120 hours, is a Flemish bartender in the town of Meerhout, near Antwerp.

The new champion, Ludwig Van Isterdael (above) ran his shift from a Tuesday through Sunday, and reported to local press that “It was tough, but it’s a nice feeling to know that I’ve completed this record.”

It’s not his first time as the record holder; at a previous job he set a record at 101 hours, which was later broken by a Belgian woman who hit 111 hours, a record that stood until his Van Isterdael’s latest stint. The rules allow a five-minute break each hour, and the breaks can be saved to make longer ones.

Bar patrons rallied to support him, organized a raffle, set up a waffle-baking station in the cafe and arranged performances on-site. After two world record wins, Van Isterdael says that he will now leave the record-breaking “to the youth,” but doubts his record will fall anytime soon.
