Georgetown, Kentucky, is known for its fine Victorian mansions, horse farms, and beautiful historic sites.
It’s also known as the home of America’s first and the world’s largest Toyota manufacturing facility.
On a recent visit, I took a tram tour through the factory, a fantastic combination of man and machine creating the company’s popular RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES 350, and America’s best-selling car for 17 years running – the Camry.
Although photos aren’t allowed on the tram tour, I learned a lot about the company and its production while whisking around this gleaming factory with a group of other guests. Our guide explained exactly what we were seeing and the precision of every movement employees, robots, and other machines make.
There is also an opportunity to better understand this facility in the Experience Center, where guests can get a good look at a mint condition 1988 Camry (title photo), the first ever made in the United States.
For 36 years, Toyota has called Georgetown home. More than 26 million vehicles and engines have been produced here since 1998. More than 105 factory suppliers are located in Kentucky as well.
