Ryanair, the European discount airline most famous for charging fees for everything now wants to be known for the fastest self-service bag check—but, of course, will still charge a fee for the bag.
The new system is expected to cut the time for checking a bag to three minutes or less.
The airline has introduced new self-service stations at Dublin Airport, and plans to add them to Cork and Shannon by the end of this month, and then will add them in some of the many European airports Ryanair flies to.
Passengers use the airline’s mobile app to sign up (and pay for) checked bags, and then use the app to read to scan a QR code on the kiosk, which then prints the baggage tags so the bag can be dropped at the nearby express area.
While the new kiosks can handle baggage, they don’t, at least for now, allow checking in the passenger.
