Two enormous rubber ducks floated into Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor last Friday, after a 10-year absence. They are part of a public art project that aims to “bring more joy to the city,” not to mention more visitors.
Hong Kong and China only recently resumed normal travel and tourism, and efforts are being made to return to pre-pandemic levels. The iconic yellow rubber duck, then a solo act, made its first appearance in Hong Kong 10 years ago as an installation by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and attracted enormous crowds.
This time there are two of the 18-metre high ducks, which will cruise the harbor and river to greet their fans. “Double duck is double luck,” said Hofman. “‘Double ducks’ is not about looking into the past but enjoying the moment together.”
