County Mayo gets pedal-power ‘trains’

Kiltimagh, in Ireland’s County Mayo, is getting rail service for the first time in 60 years, but instead of locomotives, passengers will have to provide their own power by pedaling ‘railbikes’ down the track.

The Velo Rail system, first of its kind in Ireland, allows visitors to pedal 7 km in each direction in vehicles that seat from two to five people; some can also accommodate wheelchairs.

Velo Rail says that the route is “relatively flat” and that riders will “get the chance to take in the open air while experiencing all the local flora and fauna and the fantastic views.” The ride is priced at €40 per vehicle.
