Norway just beat out its neighbor Sweden as the country with the safest roads in Europe, measured by the number of traffic deaths per million residents, with a figure of 21 to Sweden’s 22. The average for Europe is 46 per million.
Great Britain, Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, Germany and Finland were the other European nations with less than 35 deaths per million residents, according to European Traffic Safety Council.
Norway has reduced its fatality rate by 20% over the past 10 years with its Vision Zero plan to enforce rules and create traffic rules and patterns that promote safety.
Overall, most countries in Europe have reduced their death rates, with Poland winning recognition for a 47% one-year drop, from 93 per million to 50.
