Ketchikan, Alaska is a popular stop on many Alaska cruise itineraries, with historic sites, souvenir shops and more—and the more now includes a Ketchikan Salmon Walk that follows the route of a fish ladder starting right in the town.
The 1.5-mile loop follows Ketchikan Creek upstream along a route salmon follow during spawning season. Artistic fish signs along Married Man’s Trail point toward the salmon ladder; the walk also includes City Park and the Deer Mountain Fish Hatchery. The Walk project was started by local artist Ray Troll who has been painting salmon and other local themes for years.
Ketchikan Mayor Dave Kiffer says it will really help the town’s marketing: “Juneau has a glacier, Skagway hasa train. We have a salmon stream right in the middle of town. We have not featured that the way we should have in the past.”
