Holland America is taking a leaf from its past in planning a new cruise from the U.S. to Mediterranean ports and back. The 42-day itinerary is based on a 1925 brochure found by Holland America’s current itinerary planning director.
Starting in Fort Lauderdale in November, 2024, the six week voyage on Volendam will return to Fort Lauderdale just in time for Christmas, after calling at sixteen ports, mostly in the Mediterranean. Ports include Cadiz for Seville, Gibraltar, Tangier, Livorno, Rome, Naples, Catania, Athens, and stops in the Middle East at Haifa, Ashdod, Port Said, Aleandria, La Goulette and Casablanca.
The 1925 itinerary, which ran for 67 days visited 15 ports, but stayed significantly longer at some ports, including nine days in Egypt while passengers voyaged up the Nile. For their return home to New York, the cruise ended at Rotterdam, as many passengers spent additional time in Europe before heading home on another Holland America liner.
