Brussels will soon be able to add a direct tram connection to the city’s international airport with approval by city officials of a plan for a 400-metre extension that is the last ‘missing link’ in the plan.
The airport is already served by Belgium’s long-distance and commuter rail lines as well as a city bus, but the tram connection will greatly increase the ways travelers can connect city and airport. Because of Belgium’s division into Flemish- and French-speaking areas with the capital part of neither, the Flemish authority that is building the line needed permission from Brussels.
The plan as approved calls for improvements beyond the tram connection; it will be paralleled by new bicycle infrastructure, as well as more trees and greenery. The 400-metre stretch is part of an overall 12km line extension.
